Shakespeare attracts a big audience through the presentation of racial tension. Othello was however torn apart in a dishonest manner which makes one question his soundness and degree of intellectuality. Although corrupt minded characters like Lago and Roderigo makes Othello look like a disgraceful person through their derogative talks, the protagonist remains an impressive, confident and well-spoken leader in the military. Despite the pressure from the society, Shakespeare did not present Othello as an inferior character. The perceptions of the black community during this era were characterized by low opinions, being considered as second-class citizens. Even though this incident happens in the very beginning of the play, it is the motivator for Iago to destroy the lives of Michael Cassio and Othello.īeing that Iago is so intelligent and he know that he has the trust and respect from Othello, being that Othello calls him by the name of "honest Iago," Iago goes right to work in deceiving everyone around him. While Iago remains only as ensign to Othello, Michael Cassio was promoted to lieutenant even though he was ranked under Iago to start with. In the beginning of the play Iago is extremely jealous and seeking revenge on Michael Cassio and Othello, because of a promotion Iago thought he deserved but didn't get. It is also said that Iago is perhaps the best villain that a character has ever been. In fact, Iago is so manipulative throughout the entire play that it benefits him, but also causes his wife Emilia, Othello, Desdemona, and Roderigo to die. Iago is one of the more interesting characters in Shakespeare's' play "Othello." Iago can be described as an evil, jealous, manipulative and a revenge seeking character. ![]()
